Kadıkalesi (Anaia) Mound

It’s located 8 km. away from Kuşadası District, on the coast of Nazilli Housing Estate. Kadıkalesi played an important role in Aegean Sea commerce in ancient times since it was built on a convenient location to monitor the Samos Strait. The castle, dating back to the 12th century, was unearthed in 2001. The church-monastery complex inside the castle with its magnificent size and infrastructure reflects the importance of Anaia in Byzantine era. Excavations are still in progress in the castle where once Ottoman artillery batteries were stationed during the World War I.
